Jones Lang LaSalle Sydney buildings turn their lights off for Earth hour

"We invited Sydneysiders - businesses and individuals - to turn off their lights for just one hour, Earth Hour - 7.30pm to 8.30pm on 31 March 2007 - as a sign of their commitment to reduce global warming.

More than 2 million Sydney residents joined Earth Hour, according to a poll by AMR Interactive, causing a 10.2% drop in energy usage across the Sydney CBD, according to Energy Australia.

Earth Hour was just the start of a campaign that aims to reduce Sydney's greenhouse emissions by 5% in 2007. The event demonstrated how simple actions can make the world of difference if everyone takes part. And it sent a powerful message that we care about the future of the planet.

Although this year's Earth Hour was focused on Sydney, the response nationally and internationally has been amazing - with participants outside of Sydney showing their support for the campaign by joining in turning off their lights. Word spread from the UK, to South Africa, to New Zealand, and across Australia.

We are hopeful that the success of this year's event means that Earth Hour can grow into a global campaign." - earthhour.smh.com.au
